With the invention of the rudder China was able to make huge ships that could sail all around the world. It make the ship stable enough and able to steal through the bad seas.They also invented the stern post rudder and watertight compartments for ship's hulls.With these inventions, the Chinese trader and explorer Zheng Ho sailed as far as Africa between 1405 and 1433. Unfortunately, China did not follow up on these voyages. The Chinese destroyed their ocean going ships and halted further expeditions.

One of those ships must have been quite a site to behold. The construction is simply beautiful. There is something so elegent about the construction techniques of the ancient Chinese.

DeleteThose Chinese ships are amazing, China was doing this stuff many many years before it was even concieved by the Western countries. And even doing all this stuff way earlier they did it better and bigger than the later attempts. Building those enormous ships had to have been a difficult task and they were extremely well done. Too bad they stopped making them...

DeleteThis invention really blew up the ship building industry. This invention led to a dramatic increase in quality and size of ships and also the amount of ships being made. Many more were made after the rudder. The Chinese have always been very smart. These ships were monstrous and beautiful. So hard to build, yet they did it so well.
